In November 2007, Dennis DeGier survived a truck crash that left him disabled and unable to work. That was less than a month after learning his wife had terminal cancer.

DeGier was heading southbound on Highway 61 when the driver of a semi ran a red light at the intersection of highways 43 and 61 and slammed into his truck, causing it to roll over and spill his load of sawdust. DeGier was pulled bleeding from the truck, but the other driver died at the scene.

This August, Dennis’s wife Mary succumbed to the disease and died. Now Dennis has learned he needs more surgeries to help him continue to recover from the accident. The La Crosse man has injuries to his arms, legs and back.

The medical expenses from both Mary and Dennis have accumulated a sizable debt for the DeGier family and friends are hosting a fundraiser to help.

The benefit is set for Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Onalaska American Legion. They are looking for donations of goods or services to be used as raffle prizes and silent auction items.

To contribute an item or make a monetary donation, contact Shelley Wuest at 608-790-1744. Checks can be made payable to Thrivent and mailed to DeGier Family Benefit, N5965 Park Drive, Onalaska, WI 54650
