The Scenic Bluffs Chapter of the American Red Cross is setting up two locations for its second Red Cross Flood Relief Event.

Gretchen Murphy Bowman, community programs coordinator for Scenic Bluffs, said the Red Cross will conduct fund-raisers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the La Crosse Center and at Nelson Agri-Center in Viroqua, Wis.

Those wishing to help financially can drop off donations at either site.

Last August’s Flood Relief Event raised $403,000 in just one day, she said, with money going for emergency housing, food, clothing, personal hygiene supplies, salvage supplies, health-related needs and other emergency services that were required, such as client assistance cards that work like a debit card to help with flood victims’ immediate needs.

The shelter in La Farge, Wis., still is open. Other Vernon County communities have stations set up to supply communities with water and other necessary supplies.

The emergency stations are at the La Farge High School; the Community Center in Kendall, Wis.; the fire department in Ontario, Wis.; the Methodist Church in Viola, Wis.; and Prince Lutheran Church in Readstown, Wis.

The Red Cross also offered some answers to the most frequently asked questions:

  • Can’t wait to donate? You can do so now by credit card by calling (608) 788-1000 or 1-800-837-6313, or mail your donation to: Scenic Bluffs Chapter, 2927 Losey Blvd. S., La Crosse, WI 54601. Mark “Wisconsin Flood Relief” on the envelope or check.

  • Need help? Contact your local Red Cross at (608) 788-1000 or 1-800-837-6313 or dial 211 for Great Rivers 211.

  • Who will the money help? The response covers 29 Wisconsin counties, including Vernon, Juneau, La Crosse, Crawford, Richland and Grant.

  • What is the Red Cross doing right now to help flood victims? Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people’s immediate needs, such as shelter, food, and health and mental health services. Volunteer crews are performing damage assessments.

  • What happens after the flood waters recede? The Red Cross will help those affected get started in their recovery process and work with families to connect with other agencies who can help to provide intermediate and long-term relief.

  • How much of my donation goes to relief versus overhead costs? At least 91 cents of every dollar donated to the American Red Cross goes directly to disaster relief.
