For the past 15 years, those involved with the St. Clare Health Mission in La Crosse have witnessed the problems facing the poor and uninsured in our community. We also have been witness to the difference that the giving of one’s time and talents can make in the life of someone in need.
The St. Clare Health Mission is a volunteer-run medical clinic addressing the needs of those who do not have access to basic health care. The clinic is staffed by physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians, social workers and numerous support personnel, all volunteering their time and expertise.
Last fall, we reached a milestone, surpassing 50,000 visits to the clinic. The visits ranged from simple medical concerns to serious, life threatening illness.
We have seen firsthand how being uninsured can have serious consequences. Those who have been financially excluded from our health-care system go without basic screenings, missing out on early detection of disease.
Chronic health conditions go unmanaged, leading to serious complications. Medications are not affordable and many make the tough decision to go without. For those we see at the clinic, a serious or chronic illness can eliminate any security for the future.
The growing crisis of the uninsured places a heavy burden, particularly upon the most vulnerable in our community. St. Clare Health Mission is an expression of the charitable mission of the individuals and organizations involved: to serve the less fortunate and to recognize the dignity of all.
St. Clare Health Mission is a testament to the generous spirit of this community. We celebrate volunteers; they are the spirit of the mission.
