Jami Hill completed a sweep of the quarter, half and mile, while Lexie Weber won the pole vault and finished in the top three in each of her events, helping the Onalaska High School girls track and field to a third-place finish at Tuesday's Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Logan.
“The top three was one of our main goals for today,” Hilltoppers head coach Nick Larson said. “We were close to doubling our point total from a year ago (79 to 126) and getting into the 130s in points would have represented a best-case scenario for us. We're pretty happy to get close to that.”
Like a year ago, Hill ran to reasonably comfortable in wins in both the mile and half-mile. Her time of 5 minutes, 6.14 seconds in the mile was good for a nearly 6 1/2-second win over freshman teammate Maddie Hibshman, while she broke away from Central's Ashley Hammes early on the second lap on her way to a time of 2:22.52 in the mile. Hammes was eventually passed by Onalsaka freshman Jamie Burr for second, with Burr finishing in 2:25.19.
For the second straight year, Hill had the challenge of facing a true sprinter in the open 400 in Logan's Stephanie Henry. She finished nearly a half-second ahead of the Rangers sophomore a year ago, and clipped her by .06 of a second Tuesday with her time of 57.38 seconds.
Weber won the pole vault by clearing 8 feet, 3 inches. The added bonus for the Hilltoppers came when teammates Emily Mitzelfeldt and Moira Killoran won a fewest-misses tiebreak over Holmen's Emma Waffenschmidt and Sparta's Haley Berz after each cleared 8 feet.
“Lexie just hasn't had a lot of opportunites to perform,” Larson said. “The third in the 100 was a little bit unexpected, but she did an awesome job.
“We thought we had a shot to go 1-2-3 in the pole vault. To do it without hitting our personal records is great, too, but this is also the only day of the year where we're not looking for a performance. Today we're looking for places.”
Weber finished behind only state-level athletes Henry and Emily Worden of Logan in 13.04 seconds in the 100. The order of finish for the top three was the same in the open 200, with Weber finishing in 27.12 seconds.
Hibshman confirmed her win in the two-mile over Central's Hannah Sleznikow at the April 19 Knights of Columbus Relays at UW-La Crosse Tuesday, with a late kick enabling her to break away from the senior for a time of 11:43.98 and nearly four-second win. She also ran the leadoff leg in front of Burr, Brooke Reynolds and Eryn Vandermus on the fourth-place team in the 4X400 relay, leading the field after the opening leg.
Burr complemented her two-mile finish by taking fifth in the mile in 5:27.36. Reynolds may not receive the publicity of her more heralded freshman running teammates, but teamed with Jackie Groshek, Emily Sell and Anna Flood to take second in the 4X800 relay in 10:09.11, while taking seventh in the half-mile in 2:29.88. Groshek added a sixth-place time of 12:22.48 in the two-mile.
Jessica Kennedy scored in two events, taking seventh in both the long jump at 15 feet, 2 3/4 inches and in the 100 hurdles. Kennedy failed to advance to the finals in the hurdles, but did have the best non-qualifying time with Logan featuring just a six-lane track. Other scorers for OHS included Becca Newton, Brittany Newman, Tori Wymer and Agnes Mros.
