It was no doubt destiny that caused a cute black Labrador puppy to slide a wet, pink tongue across the face of my 10-year-old daughter on an August day in 1995.

When Zoe de Boer and Alexis Marcon finished their books for the Mary Jo Nettesheim Memorial Literary Competition, they each were worried that they might win. They’re such good friends, they thought losing would be better than winning something without the other winning, too.

 | A TREE TALE: The Hopa Crab trees popped into bloom this week, and if it seems like there might be more than the usual share of the colorful trees in the city of Onalaska, thank the city's garden club members. While researching Onalaska history, Nancy Tolvstad came across a Record-Times article dated March 23, 1961, that detailed the garden club's efforts to get as many people as possible to plant Hopa Crab trees. "The object of this is twofold," the article says. "First, to beautify the city of Onalaska, and second, to make the city known far and wide as ‘The City of Hopa Crabs.'" Garden club members gave presentations at civic groups, PTA meetings, church organizations and even went door to door.
